Sun Song
May—June, 2022

Medium:
Durational Walk

Duration:
30 days, 370 miles
Sun Song was a 30-day, 370-mile walk spanning ten cities along the East Coast, beginning in Boston and ending in Miami. Moving south in three-night increments—Boston, Providence, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., Richmond, Charleston, Savannah, Orlando, and Miami—I relocated by train between cities and then walked daily loops of 10–15 miles, beginning and ending at the same address. Routes were largely unplanned. I walked in one direction for several hours and turned around when it felt time.

The walk moved through Confederate monuments, sites of mass violence, highway corridors marked “no pedestrians,” and neighborhoods shaped by large-scale development and displacement. Heat rash, dehydration, limited public restrooms, Amtrak delays, and subtropical insects were constant conditions. Rather than covering ground efficiently, the project emphasized repetition, return, and extended exposure to the built environment at three miles per hour. Read more here.
